It's never too late to start loving your life!
Let us help you find joy again.
Welcome—I’m so glad you’re here.
If life at home has left you feeling emotionally drained, worried about your child or family, or simply overwhelmed by the demands of daily life, please know you’re not alone. Many individuals and families today are navigating complex challenges—balancing personal well-being while caring for others. You may find yourself wondering if life is supposed to feel more manageable or joyful. That question is often the first step toward healing.
Since 2009, I’ve been deeply honored to walk alongside clients through their most vulnerable moments. I care greatly about this work—from young children to teens, adults, and families. Supporting people in discovering clarity, peace, and purpose is a privilege I don’t take lightly.
In 2023, I founded Rooted Counseling, a group practice grounded in relational, values-driven care. My vision was to expand services to meet the growing mental health needs of families and individuals in our community. Through Rooted Counseling, I now have the joy of not only serving more clients but also mentoring and supervising other therapists as they grow in their clinical work. Building a collaborative team of thoughtful, compassionate professionals allows us to offer even more support to the families we serve.
My areas of expertise include:
Trauma (EMDR and Trauma-Focused CBT)
Attachment
Child & Adolescent Therapy (Play, Art, and Sand Tray Therapy)
Parenting Support & Coaching
Women’s Issues
Self-Esteem & Identity
Life Transitions
Anxiety & Depression
Christian Counseling (upon request)
As a psychotherapist, I believe in the importance of treating the whole person—which includes mind, body, and soul. I’ll help you discover what roots you and your family. We’ll then use that as a guide for healing.
Meet Heather Peterson, LMFT
Clinical Director & Founder
I approach therapy with a holistic and relational lens. Whether you’re a parent seeking support for your child, a woman navigating life’s transitions, or an individual carrying the weight of unresolved trauma, my goal is to create a compassionate, safe, and reflective space just for you.
As a wife and mother of two, I personally understand the importance of having a space to reconnect with yourself—and how essential it is to support the family system as a whole. When our lives feel out of alignment with what truly matters to us, we often experience emotional discomfort—like anxiety or depression. Together, we can work to uncover the deeper causes, restore balance, and build healthier patterns.
My work with children frequently includes family therapy, as I believe parents and caregivers are vital to the healing process. With adults, our work often takes on a deeper, longer-term focus, grounded in attachment theory and values-based exploration.
I also have a strong passion for trauma recovery and use EMDR to help clients of all ages process painful experiences in a way that brings lasting relief and transformation. For those who desire it, I offer Christian counseling as part of an integrated therapeutic approach.
We’re all grieving something. Finding yourself here likely means that the weight has become too heavy to carry alone. I believe you’re here for a reason and my team and I would be honored to support you in finding renewed hope, connection, and joy in your life.
Let’s connect.

I am deeply passionate about helping children, teens, and families navigate the emotional and psychological challenges that life presents. My goal is to support you in finding healing, wholeness, and joy in your life.
Do you have a child or teen who is acting out at home or school and you find yourself feeling overwhelmed as to how to manage or how to help? Or perhaps they’re withdrawn and anxious and this has you concerned. As a parent, it can be challenging to know how best to support your child through these big emotions and behaviors. Many children and teens today are struggling with anxiety, depression, and behavioral challenges. These struggles often lead to acting out at home or school, and it can be difficult for them to understand or articulate why they feel the way they do. The constant cycle of negative feedback from teachers and school staff and turmoil at home can be discouraging, leaving you unsure of who to turn to for guidance or how to advocate for your child.
I take a holistic approach to therapy, working with children, teens, and families to help them better understand and manage their emotions. Using play, art, and sand tray therapy, I am able to create a compassionate, fun, and supportive space where children can explore their thoughts and feelings. I’ve found that collaborating with families to provide the right tools and support for their children leads to the best long-term outcomes, especially when it comes to emotional regulation and overall well-being.
Some of my specialities are:
Children and Teens (Including Play, Art, and Sand Tray Therapy)

Relationship and Couples Counseling
As a wife of 26 years and a mother of five, I have a deep understanding of the challenges that life brings. Before becoming a therapist, I spent many years as a preschool teacher, and one of my greatest joys is connecting with children and teens exactly where they are, seeing them for who they truly are, and meeting them in the present moment. In my career as a therapist, I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals who have experienced trauma. I understand how difficult and confusing it can be to navigate trauma, and I am honored to walk alongside each person on their healing journey.
My passion for working alongside women and mothers is encompassed in my understanding of the complexities of life as a woman and mother. By offering tailored interventions, I empower women to learn to care for themselves, manage stress, and develop coping strategies; fostering both emotional healing and long-term mental health gains. In this therapeutic space that’s designed just for you, together we can help you to regain your sense of self while navigating stressors that are unique to being a woman as well as the profound changes that come with motherhood.
It would be a privilege to work with you as you begin or continue your therapeutic journey. My approach is grounded in creating a supportive, nonjudgmental space where you can explore yourself more deeply, develop new tools for resilience, and begin to rediscover the small joys in everyday life. I’d love to work with you and/or your family. I’m looking forward to hearing from you! We can do this. Let’s get started!

My approach is grounded in compassion, respect, and a genuine commitment to meeting you where you are. I believe deeply in the power of empathy, understanding and holistic care. My goal is to empower families to face their challenges with resilience and hope.

My mission is to ease that fear by creating a warm, welcoming environment where you can feel safe to share what’s on your heart. As a single mom of two, I have personally experienced the heartache of divorce, the complexities of co-parenting, and the delicate, emotional process of blending families. These transitions can feel overwhelming and isolating—for both parents and children. I know what it’s like to feel lost in the chaos, unsure of how to move forward while trying to hold everything together.
That’s why one of my deepest passions is creating a nurturing, judgment-free space where families can find common ground and reconnect. I believe every family deserves the chance to heal, rebuild trust, and grow stronger through life’s hardest moments. Whether I’m working with a child, a teenager, or parents in transition, my goal is to provide steady support, open communication, and genuine understanding. Together, we can build bridges that connect—rather than walls that divide—and move toward a future where compassion and resilience lead the way.
My goal is to walk alongside you, offering support and empowerment throughout your healing journey. Whether you are seeking support for yourself, your child, your teen, or your family, I am here to provide a safe, compassionate space where you can be seen, heard, and understood. I am welcoming new clients in both Folsom and Loomis- I look forward to hearing from you!

With a holistic and strength-based approach, I consider the whole person as we work together to build resiliency and clarity. It is my goal to provide a safe, supportive environment that fosters exploration, healing, and growth.
We’re all human and need a safe place to unravel our story. For some of us, it’s an unexpected curveball that life throws at us and for others it’s allowing ourselves the space to heal past wounds that brings us to seeking therapy. Whatever you are facing, I’m glad you are here! In my work with couples, children and teens, and adults, I tailor the therapeutic process to meet each client’s unique needs and goals.
With couples, I provide a space to strengthen connection, improve communication, and break free from painful cycles that often leave both partners feeling unseen or misunderstood. I help couples work through challenges such as trust issues, parenting stress, intimacy concerns, and the lingering impact of past hurts. Whether you are in crisis or simply desiring to grow closer, therapy can provide tools to foster deeper understanding, rebuild emotional safety, and create a healthier, more fulfilling partnership.
For adults, I provide a supportive space to navigate identity, self-esteem, life transitions, and relationship concerns. I have a special interest in working with women, supporting them through seasons of change, postpartum challenges, the demands of balancing multiple roles, and rediscovering a sense of self.
With children, I use play, art, and sand tray therapy to create a safe and engaging environment where they can express what words often cannot capture. I believe every child communicates in their own unique way, and these approaches help them process big feelings, reduce anxiety, and build confidence. I work closely with parents to strengthen the parent–child relationship and equip families with strategies that support growth at home and school.

If you are facing challenges in your relationship, worried about your child or family, or overwhelmed with the struggles life brings, it would be a privilege to support you. You don’t have to carry the weight of these challenges alone. Therapy offers a space where you can breathe, reflect, and find clarity. I believe that even in the hardest seasons, healing is possible and hope can be restored. Together, we will work to uncover the strengths you already possess while also equipping you with new tools to face the future with confidence. Whether you are seeking therapy for the first time or returning, as someone that has walked their own path of self-discovery and healing, I know the courage that is required to begin the journey. It is truly an honor to walk alongside my clients as they discover their own path towards healing.
My passion for walking alongside others is rooted in my own experience of not doing it alone. I have witnessed the power of being truly seen, supported, and encouraged during difficult times, and I bring that same commitment to my work with clients. I consider it a sacred honor to hold space for people as they rediscover who they are, reconnect to what matters most, and step into a life of greater peace and joy. No matter what your story holds, you are not alone—and it would be my privilege to walk this path with you.

I am devoted to supporting children, teens, young adults, and parents through the emotional challenges that shape their stories. My goal is to create a safe, nurturing space where healing, confidence, and connection can take place.
If you’re here, you’re probably feeling overwhelmed — by your child’s behavior, your teen’s pain, or your own emotions that feel too heavy to carry alone. Maybe you’re watching someone you love struggle, and you’re doing everything you can to help, but nothing seems to be changing. Or maybe you’re the one feeling anxious, shut down, angry, or unsure of who you are anymore. You might be wondering if things can get better, or if anyone truly sees what you’re going through behind the scenes.
So many of the children, teens, young adults, and parents I work with carry deep fears — that they’re not enough, that they’re hard to love, that things won’t ever get better, or that no one truly sees or understands them. They want connection. They want someone who will listen without judgment. And they want hope that the future doesn’t have to look like the past.
My work is centered on helping clients feel more grounded, hopeful, and secure. Kids begin to express their feelings more confidently. Teens find their voice and build a sense of identity. Young adults start to feel more capable and supported as they navigate major life transitions. Parents gain clarity, tools, and a stronger connection with their child. Together, we work toward a life that feels lighter — one where emotions make sense, communication feels easier, and confidence begins to grow.
My areas of focus include:
Children + Teens (including Play, Art, and Sand Tray Therapy)
Parenting Support
Family Therapy
Young Adults & College-Aged
Athletes
Anxiety
Depression
Child Behavioral Issues
Identity + self-esteem
Life Transitions
Attachment

As a therapist, I bring a calm, steady presence to the room. I’m warm, patient, and deeply attentive, but also direct when it’s needed. Clients often tell me they feel understood, cared for, and supported in ways they haven’t experienced before. I use creativity, play, art, and practical problem-solving to meet each person exactly where they are on that day.
I came into this field because supporting others has always been a natural part of who I am. I’ve been fascinated by the mind, emotions, and the resilience people carry — even when they can’t feel it themselves. My own experiences have shaped how I show up: with empathy, openness, and a belief that healing is possible for anyone. This work feels like purpose, and I’m honored to walk alongside the kids, teens, young adults, and families who trust me with their stories.
Outside of the therapy room, I’m a former collegiate softball athlete, and those years taught me about teamwork, perseverance, and believing in yourself even when circumstances feel tough — lessons that show up in my therapeutic approach every day.
If you’re ready to take the next step toward healing and support, I’d be honored to walk with you. You don’t have to navigate this alone.
